The study of mathematical creativity in children

Project MaKreKi is intended to study the creative mathematical abilities of children. In this context, it is, for instance, of interest how the mathematical creativity of a child, its social environment and its life course are interrelated. The cooperation with psychologists and psychoanalysts of the Sigmund-Freud-Institut (Project EVA) and math didactics experts from Goethe Universität (Project erStMaL) allows us to study this interesting problem jointly and with an interdisciplinary approach.

Mathematical creativity can also often be found in persons with an unusual course of life. Examples for this fact are the life courses of famous mathematicians such as Pascale, Grothendieck or Lambert. Especially the social environment and circumstances at an early age seem to play a significant role. However, this aspect has hitherto found hardly any systematic analysis. Our study is a first step in this direction.

In order to find out more about the creative mathematical abilities of children in their interplay with the respective social environment and individual development, we initially want to follow children in the kindergarten age for three years. For this, children are offered mathematical but also everyday situations of play and exploration in the familiar environment of the kindergarten, in which they can engage in exchange with other children. The focus of our study is especially on unusual and surprising ways in which children approach these situations of play and exploration. For our work with these children, we developed particular situations of exploration in mathematical areas, such as geometry or the handling of quantities and patterns, which allow connections with the field of role-play and art. Also of interest are situations in which parents embark on explorations together with their children.
